ATX Hackerspace Hours

Because of the summer heat, we're asking that if you're interested in coming to check out the space, to join our mailing list and post a message a day or so before coming over to ask someone to be your host. You can also check the IRC channel (#austinhackerspace on freenode)

Objectives

  1. Create an open community of hackers, artists, and open source/hardware enthusiasts to create, share, learn, and collaborate
  2. Help spread knowledge to the larger community, especially in the areas of: technology, DIY, and security
  3. Provide a space for creating, collaborations, workshops, and classes
  4. Provide resources (hardware, tools, materials, access, knowledge) to members and the community
  5. Assist other groups that share similar objectives
  6. Seek to enable others, and others' projects; to help break down barriers; and to avoid erecting barriers

What is it?

After far too much talking and not enough doing, we've finally found a space to create some awesome projects. The space is a 4000 sqft warehouse at 209 E Ben White, near S Congress and I-35.

We are also working on leasing a new space! More information soon.

The space is perfect for artists, designers, engineers, hackers, fabbers, scientists, musicians, seminars and workshops, coworking, and a ton of other stuff. Anything that needs a large space, involves loud equipment, messy equipment (woodworking, soldering/welding, painting), power equipment (120V, 240V, and 3-phase power available), or ventilation for fumes (etching, spray painting, varnish, etc).

More importantly, we're looking to establish a community. There are lots of different groups in Austin, and friends meeting at coffeeshops, bars, and homes. If we combine skills, knowledge, ideas, tools, and materials, just imagine the massive projects that could be undertaken! Even if you're not into any of this, but want to learn, there will be some very smart and fun people around to help teach.

What can I do to help?

Become a Member!

Memberships are available at various levels. Please see our membership page for more info.

Donations & WishList

Pop onto our WishList page and see if there is anything on there you might be able to donate to the space. We are now also accepting cash donations!

Build-Out

Right now, there's a lot of value in helping with building and cleaning up the space. Really, it's just a lot of physical (but fun!) labor to get the space ready for use.

Get The Word Out

There's also a lot of value in getting the word out, starting up discussions here or in the IRC channel, adding to the wiki, suggesting projects and ideas, etc.

What tools are available?

The space already has:

  • welder
  • power tools
  • rolling door
  • conference room, 8×10 workshops with AC
  • various electrical configurations with individual breakers
  • lockable storage spaces

Additionally it will have:

  • general purpose tools (hammers, screwdrivers, etc)
  • smaller woodworking tools
  • a server or two, possibly providing access to VMs and a hackable “sandbox”
  • electronics workbench and soldering/prototyping tools
